quest traits

description

Age Recommendation: 15-17

Prerequisites: Pyramid Project and possibly Quest Principles

Concurrent Project Recommendation: Classical Acting or Edison Project

The Name of this Project comes from Steven Covey's 7 Habits.  Covey defines the Qualities of principles as Universal, Enduring, Self-evident, and Timeless.

Traits of a Statesman (Leader) learned about in Quest Traits:

-Virtue

-Wisdom

-Courage

-Diplomacy

-Inspiring greatness in others

-Moving the cause of liberty

This project has a strong emphasis on public speaking.  They will choose a person from history that they want to learn more about that exhibits one of the above virtues.  They will then create a speech that introduces that person to their audience.  They will connect for their audience how that person is a good example of that particular trait of a statesman.  After their speech, they will write a persuasive essay about that trait using their chosen person to curate examples of that trait.

By learning to find their own leaders among history and current times who exemplify the traits that great leaders possess, they begin to see how they can be leaders (statesmen) in their own communities.  They also work on these essential traits as they come to see themselves and each other as people who can and will influence the world for good. It is highly recommended that a scholar obtain a writing coach to give additional support throughout Quest.

The other main focus in Quest Traits is the study of World Views.  They will dive deep into worldviews and how they color the world around us.  They will begin to see these world views in the media, movies, books, and even conversations the are all around them.  They will also write their own worldview manifesto.

*Please note that age recommendations and prerequisites are not hard and fast. There is room to individualize as a scholar's needs dictate.   The Quest classes can be taken in any order, but more will be expected of a second year Quest scholar.  After they complete their second year, regardless of which Quest project it is, they will be invited to a graduation dinner and they will give a culminating speech.   First year Quest students will also be invited to attend, but will not give a speech until their second year.
