Liber Academy is a New Commonwealth in Davis County. We meet in Fruit Heights, Utah on Wednesday from 9:-2:00. It is a family program, offering Leadership Education for youth between the ages of 2-18 years. Parents are encouraged to train, mentor, and volunteer time and talents to the Commonwealth.
Teaching and mentoring at Liber Academy is based on the philosophies of A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille, which is the foundational book for our Commonwealth. This book teaches a set of principles that lead us in our pursuit of a Liberal Arts Education.
Another source which is implemented in our program is the Leadership Education Mentoring Institute (LEMI). All of our Core classes are taught by members who volunteer and attend training through LEMI, which teaches Liberal Arts and accompanying principles. We incorporate and respect phases of learning, which are Core Phase, Love of Learning, and the various stages in Scholar Phase- practice, apprentice, and self-directed. Our mission is to help our scholars gain vision for their lives and to discover their own personal mission, abilities through learning, skills through experience, and knowledge through the Scholar Projects offered at Liber Academy.
Liber Academy offers project-based learning and Leadership Education for children ages 2-18 and Lifelong Learning for adult members. However, our main focus is on scholar age, which is 12-18. As our children enter their teens, they are ready for intellectually stimulating projects, more interaction as they learn alongside their peers, and greater responsibility to take their education to a deeper level. Liber provides a safe, yet challenging environment so that the youth can grow into successful, productive adults who have experience creating change in themselves and their community.
During the school year we meet on Wednesdays and hold a variety of classes. Our school is not for drop-off situations; parents are asked to train and volunteer time teaching and supporting the various classes which are offered within our Junior Program and Scholar Projects.
As our school meets and works toward specific goals as a group, the youth will grow together and learn to share what they are learning with others. Liber Academy also offers a great way for families to create a community; to support and learn from each other.
Liber scholars are challenged in various ways which will serve them well throughout their life, including:
Critical Thinking
Public Speaking
Effective Writing
Respectful Debate
Scientific Reasoning
Self Reliance
We use a variety of learning environments in the classroom, such as:
Reading
Writing Papers
Simulation
Lecture
Testing
Field Experience
Youth who complete four-six years of structured classes offered at Liber are not only prepared to be leaders, they will have learned to embrace lifelong learning.
